Environmental Day Lesson Plan
Ethi- Thinking!
Standards-4.3.B Identify how human actions affect environmental health (first grade)

Materials- cards with people harming the environment on them, three hula hoops, lots of trash to use a props, three recycling bins

Anticipatory set- The students will be divided into three groups. They will be asked to stand in a line behind the hula hoop they were placed in front of. Inside the hula hoop is a bunch of trash. Start off the lesson by telling the students to look at all the trash I found on the floor. Ask them how it looks, and where they think this trash belongs. Allow for the students to answer with things like in the trash or recycling bin. Praise the students for their right answers. I think we need to be friends to our earth and place all this trash in the recycling bin. I will do that by having a relay race! I need one student at a time to take a piece of trash out of the hula hoop and hop it down to the recycling bin and continue hoping back. They student with then sit down in the back of the line to signify to me that they are done. The students will continue to do this till all the trash is recycled. Praise the students for their good work to help the environment!
Procedure- After the recycling relay the teacher will split up the class into 4 groups. Each group will receive a card. On that card with be a picture and description of someone hurting the environment. The 4 cards include overpopulation, deforestation, land pollution, and water pollution. Examples: the group who has overpopulation could stand in a square that is taped on the floor that is in the front of the room. This would demonstrate how the earth has too many people and if we have too many people in one area it is hard to do many things. The group who has land pollution can pretend to throw trash and damage the environment. The group who has water pollution can stand in a small hula hoop to demonstrate how sea life can get stuck in plastic soda can holder. Also the group who has deforestation can pretend to knock down trees while other students are animals who run away. Each group of students will act out their skit in front of the class. As soon as the skit is done ask the students how they would correct the situation so that you would not harm the environment.

Closure- After each group has presented their skit the teacher will sum up the activity by reviewing the problems that were represented by the activities. The teacher will also review with the student what the solution were to those problems. Students can also give other solutions to these problems at this time.
